What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO is everything behind the scenes that helps Google find, read and show your website. It’s less about what your pages say, and more about whether Google can get to them in the first place.

Think of your website as a shop. Your content is what’s on the shelves. Technical SEO is making sure the door opens, the lights work and the sign outside isn’t facing the wall.

You can have the best shelves in town, but if the door’s locked, nobody’s buying. A technical SEO consultant finds the locked doors and gets them open, without you needing to learn what a canonical tag is.

Signs you might have a technical problem

  • Your website doesn’t show up when you search for your business name
  • New pages take ages to appear in Google, or never do
  • Your site is slow, especially on a phone
  • Google Search Console keeps emailing you about errors
  • You moved or rebuilt your website and your visitors dropped

What we check and fix

The usual suspects behind a website that Google can’t quite see. We check all of them, then fix the ones that matter most first.

  • Indexing

    Can Google find your pages?

We check which pages Google has indexed (added to its list of pages it can show in search) and fix whatever’s keeping the others out.

  • Speed

    Faster pages

We find what’s slowing your pages down, like oversized images or heavy plugins, and sort it. That includes Core Web Vitals, Google’s own scores for how fast and stable a page feels.

  • Mobile

    Works properly on a phone

Plenty of your visitors will be on a phone. We make sure your text, buttons and menus work properly on a small screen, because that’s the version Google looks at first.

  • Links

    Broken links and redirects

We find links that lead nowhere (404 errors) and point old addresses to the right new pages with redirects, so nobody hits a dead end.

  • Sitemaps

    Sitemaps and robots.txt

A sitemap is a list of your pages for Google. A robots.txt file tells Google where it can and can’t go. We make sure both are set up properly and aren’t hiding anything important.

  • Schema

    Structured data

Schema is a bit of code that tells Google exactly what’s on a page, like your opening hours, prices or FAQs. It can help your listing stand out in search results.

We also check things like HTTPS (the padlock in your browser), duplicate pages and canonical tags (labels that tell Google which version of a page is the main one).

Two ways to work with us

Some people want it all done for them. Others already have a developer and just need to know what to tell them. Either is fine, and you can mix and match.

We fix it for you

Hands-on fixes

If your website runs on WordPress, Wix or Shopify, we can make the fixes ourselves and tell you what we changed.

  • £50 an hour, only for the time it takes
  • No retainer and no contract
  • Ideal if you don’t have a developer
Your developer fixes it

A clear fix list

Already have a developer or web designer? We’ll find the problems and write them up as a clear, prioritised list they can work through.

  • £50 an hour, only for the time it takes
  • Works with any website platform
  • Your developer gets plain instructions, not a riddle

Not sure which suits you? Start with the £150 audit. It shows what needs fixing first, so you can decide who does it.

A technical SEO consultant, not an agency

Big technical SEO agencies do great work for big websites. Most small businesses just need someone to find the problem, fix it and leave them to it.

Technical SEO FAQs

A few of the questions we get asked most.

Technical SEO is the behind-the-scenes part: whether Google can find, load and understand your pages. The rest of SEO is mostly about your content and your reputation, like what your pages say and who links to you. You need both, but a technical problem can stop the rest from working at all.

Not always. Lots of small websites only need a few quick fixes, and some need none at all. That’s why we suggest starting with a £150 audit. It tells you whether there’s a technical problem worth fixing before you spend anything else.

£50 an hour, with no retainer and no contract, so you only pay for the time the work actually takes. Tell us what’s going on and we’ll give you a rough idea of how many hours it should take. Most people start with our £150 audit, which shows what needs fixing and in what order.

Yes, if your website runs on WordPress, Wix or Shopify. We can make the fixes ourselves, or write them up for your developer if you’d rather they did it. It’s your choice.

Yes. We can still find the problems and explain them, then give you or your developer a clear list of what to fix and in what order.

It depends on the problem. Some fixes, like unblocking pages Google couldn’t see, can make a difference fairly soon after Google next visits your site. Others take weeks to show. We can’t promise rankings (nobody honest can), but we can make sure nothing technical is holding you back.
